No D in Washington

Posted Apr. 10 at 12:27 AM

Working on the team defense rankings for next season. When I do this, I look back at the history of how defenses have performed over the last few years, particularly in fantasy terms.

The Bears, Packers, Chargers and Eagles have been the best fantasy defenses over the last five years in our scoring system, which gives 2 points for all sacks and turnovers and 6 points for all touchdowns.

At the other end of the spectrum, you probably wouldn't be surprised to learn that the Jaguars and Texans are two of the worst fantasy defenses. Those teams usually have lesser pass rushes, and it probably doesn't help that they annually get torn up twice by two of the league's biggest stars, Peyton Manning and Chris Johnson. (Not to overrate that; it's only two games.)

But the absolute worst fantasy defense the last five years? Washington. They're worst in terms of annual fantasy points, as the table below shows, and they're also the only team that has gone five years without having a single finish in the top 20. Even Houston (13th in 2007) and Jacksonville (12th that same year) have ranked that high at least once. As a fantasy defense in the last five seasons, Washington has truly stood alone.

The table below shows average weekly fantasy points for defense and specials teams over the last five years, including each team's highest seasonal finishes in that timeframe.
