Washington appears to be eyeing Gabbert

Posted Apr. 26 at 10:56 PM

It's the day before the NFL Draft, so a lot of wild rumors are flying around. But one that not only makes sense but seems to have a realistic chance of happening involves Denver, picking No. 2, and Washington.

A report has been out there for a while that Washington is enamored with Blaine Gabbert as its franchise quarterback of the future. Trading up to No. 2, as this report from NFL.com indicates they're looking to do, would get it done.

Obviously, there's a strong connection between the two franchises, with Mike Shanahan calling the shots in Washington and his former quarterback John Elway making the decisions in Denver. The Broncos need defensive help and extra draft picks, while Shanahan is always on the lookout for a franchise quarterback.

Rumors like this abound on the eve of the draft. With a little searching you can find reports about the Steelers hoping to trade up for guard Mike Pouncey, the Falcons hoping to trade up for one of the draft's top wideouts to pair with Roddy White, and veterans Steve Smith and Chad Ochocinco possibly on the trade block (with trading a possibility depending on today's legal developments).

Many of those rumors, as is the case every year, probably won't come to pass, but Gabbert to Washington seems like a real possibility.

Shanahan seems to have wanted Bradford last year. I thin McNabb was forced on him by ownership. This year, he gets his own toy.
