Around the NFL
It looks like the Eagles are going to have a new kicker. With David Akers an unrestricted free agent, they used a fourth-round pick on Alex Henery of Nebraska.
Henery isn't just a kicking prospect, he hit over 85 percent of his field goals in each of his final three years of college. He went 18 of 19 last year, including two of three from 50 plus.
He is the highest-drafted kicker since Stephen Gostkowski.
Akers is 36. He'll likely latch on somewhere, but it's not certain. He led the league in scoring last year but isn't anything special in terms of accuracy or range.
The Eagles placed the transition tag on Akers prior to free agency, but he declined to sign it. That is proving to be a big mistake. As soon as the league is open for business, that tag will no longer be available.
Henery will be the Philadelphia kicker (and probably a top-5 player at that position in the upcoming season).
