Second-round running back Daniel Thomas is a popular pick as a rookie to contribute right away, with the Dolphins possibly saying goodbye to both Ricky Williams and Ronnie Brown once free agency occurs. Don't be certain, however, that both backs will depart.
A report in the Miami Herald indicates that not only would Brown be open to a return, but that he's the preferred choice (over Williams) if the Dolphins are able to re-sign one of them. If either back does return, Thomas' value as a rookie would be considerably less.
That said, Brown might be looking for a contract for more than what Miami, with needs all over the place and a possible workhorse rookie runner in the fold, is willing to pay. It's possible the older Williams will be easier to retain.
Either way, it seems likely that Thomas will be paired with another player in Miami's backfield, at least in 2011.
