Around the NFL
Kendall Hunter was one of the more electric running backs in this year's drafts, so it was a little disappointing that he was drafted by a team that already has a clear starter in Frank Gore. Long-term, though, he might pay off very well for owners in dynasty formats.
Sacramento Bee writer Matt Barrows notes that NFL Films' Greg Cosell sees another electric back, Brian Westbrook in Hunter's game. Westbrook, of course, was with the 49ers last season. He didn't play much last season, but the rookie should be more involved. And his future looks bright.
Hunter wasn't used as much of a pass catcher in college, but that had more to do with Oklahoma State's offense; he's considered a capable receiver and pass blocker. Cosell says Hunter, like Westbrook, is very powerful for his listed 5-foot-7, 199-pound size. San Francisco GM Trent Baalke calls him a "four-down player."
"This is a guy we feel can run the power game, can run between the tackles, can get out on the edges, can pass protect, can come out of the backfield and catch the football, can return kicks (and) can play on coverage teams, if we ask him to," Baalke said.
Hunter's value in re-draft leagues may be minimal, but he's a rookie to consider strongly in long-term formats.
