Patriots come up short in postseason

Posted Jun. 04 at 03:39 PM

I hear complaints in fantasy leagues about the unfairness of the highest-scoring team not winning. A team has a solid regular season – maybe even a great one – and then goes cold in the playoffs.

Heck, I’ve been one of those guys myself. We still go touchdown-only in the Daily Football League, and that 25-year-old league is pretty much a crapshoot in the playoffs. Rarely does the best team ever win it.

But it’s really not that different in the real game, and the Patriots reminded as much last season, when they scored the 7th-most points ever, then came up cold in the playoffs against the Jets (a team they destroyed 45-3 late in the regular season).

Only one of the eight eight scoring team, in fact, actually sealed the deal by winning the Super Bowl.

EIGHT HIGHEST SCORING TEAMS EVER
   Pts   Year   Team
589   2007   New England (lost in Super Bowl)
556   1998   Minnesota (low in NFC Championship)
541   1983   Washington (lost in Super Bowl)
   540   2000   St. Louis (lost Wild-Card game)
526   1999   St. Louis (won Super Bowl)
522   2004   Indianapolis (lost, divisional playoffs)
518   2010   New England (lost, divisional playoffs)
513   1984   Miami (low in Super Bowl)

The major flaw I see with this arguement is in the NFL teams get to play defense and special teams. In fantasy football all you can do is score. You can't restrict your opponents scoring potential at all. Therefore, the team that scores the most overall points is the best team that year to me, regardless of how different systems twist that reality to fit their needs. That said, I feel that playing every other team every week is an even better way to judge the best team. That way, consistency is also weighed in and everybody has to take the brunt of that fluke player explosion on a given week. One more thing, NFL......GET HER DONE!!!! We want football on time and on schedule!
