Factoid
San Francisco hit gold with Jerry Rice in the 1985 draft. They got him at 16th overall, after two other receivers had been selected. Eddie Brown and Al Toon were both solid pros, but Rice became the greatest receiver ever.
Since that time, the 49ers haven’t been as fortunate with wide receivers. They have used three first-round picks on wideouts and they haven’t gotten an 800-yard receiving season out of any of them. Two of those receivers (J.J. Stokes, Michael Crabtree) were selected 10th overall.
It’s too early to stick a fork in Crabtree. He’s only been around for two years. But he hasn’t shown much yet. He would not be a first-rounder if teams were given the opportunity of a do-over for that draft.
