Want to be in the Experts Poll of the 2012 edition of Fantasy Football Index magazine? Then be sure to enter our free Fantasy Index Super League.
If you want to use Aaron Rodgers or Drew Brees in Week 1, you’ll have to enter today.
This is the free contest we run each year. Just pick a lineup each week. You can take anybody from any team – 2 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 2 TE and 2 PK – and that’s your team for the week. We’ll be giving out weekly prizes, and the most points at the end of the season is the overall winner.
Go to the MyFantasyLeague website to enter.
The winner of this contest at the end of the season will be given the opportunity to participate in the Experts Poll or the Mock Draft in our next magazine – their choice. The second-place finisher will get whatever’s left. There are also weekly prizes throughout the year.
This is a free contest.
My own picks for Week 1 are as follows …
QUARTERBACKS
Rodgers and Vick. I would prefer to not use either of these guys. With Philadelphia’s offensive line having all kinds of problems, I think Vick could be a disappointment this week and this season. Wouldn’t surprise me to see them get upset in St. Louis. But when I run the numbers and account for his 40-60 rushing yards, he’s simply too far ahead of the other quarterbacks. With Rodgers, he’s put up modest numbers in all three of his career openers and is playing the team that has allowed fewer touchdowns than anyone else over the last two years. Plus a lot of these Thursday openers have been low-scoring. I would like to sit him as well, but for who? Roethlisberger and Brady are on the road against good defenses. Rivers should my No. 3, but with Minnesota being short-handed at defensive tackle, I think the Chargers will have a lot of success with the run. Like Vick, Rodgers will run.
RUNNING BACKS
Here’s where I will zag rather than zig. I don’t want to have an entry that’s like everyone else, so I will avoid the top 2 backs on my board – Gore and Charles. Charles looked a little iffy in the preseason, and the 49ers are the 49ers. I will instead go with a couple of less heralded runners. Hillis and Beanie Wells. I think the Browns will totally smoke the Bengals, and Hillis will lead the way. He’s a good pass catcher. Wells isn’t a receiver, but he’s at home against a lousy Carolina run defense.
WIDE RECEIVERS
I’m playing it painfully conservative here: White, Fitzgerald and Andre Johnson. The only wild card I considered was Mike Wallace of Pittsburgh, going against young defensive backs in Baltimore. But Johnson looked awfully sharp in the preseason.
TIGHT ENDS
I would love to put Hernandez and Jimmy Graham in my lineup. Young guys on the rise. But when I run the numbers, they’re a notch behind the Old Pros: Gates and Witten. Gates might start 16 games for me. With Witten, I think he might benefit from the Jets’ great cornerbacks. If Bryant and Austin get shut down, that should translate into more balls for Witten.
KICKERS
There is a weekly prize up for grabs, so I don’t want to start a kicker and quarterback from the same team. They would be working against each other. So no Crosby, the top guy on my board. I will instead go with Kaeding, who should benefit in the big rout over the Vikings. The Jets will destroy the Cowboys, so Nick Folk is my other kicker.
DEFENSES
I’m going with Cleveland and Arizona. Rookie quarterbacks need time to adjust to the pro game, so I expect Cam Newton and Andy Dalton will be taking plenty of sacks and dishing up plenty of fumbles and interceptions. The Browns also have a real nice return game. What? … We’re not doing defenses? Bruce Taylor and Justin Eleff are scared to compete? Nevermind.

Rivers in threes Mcfadden Charles fitzgerald Megatron and roddy Gates Finley Tractors Ebay. Forgive the voice recognition software Really should be praised I'll let you guess on the kicker

I've got Threes = Brees. I can see that Tractors = Rackers. I can't figure out eBay. Dallas is starting Bailey. Kaeding and Feely don't seem close enough.

You are correct on Brees and Rackers. (Tractors made me laugh.) "Really should be praised" is how it took me saying "Threes should be Brees." For the other kicker, I said "Seabass" for Sebastian Janikowski. Smartphone software guesses "eBay."

Andy: Your voice recognition software's lineup vs. my girl's lineup would be a pick-'em most weeks.
