With Willie Parker coming back from a broken leg, the Steelers are considering selecting a running back in the first round of the draft. They brought in Jonathan Stewart for a visit on Thursday, according to an article by Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
A few months back, Stewart wouldn’t have been available when the Steelers are are on the clock with the 23rd selection, but he’s undergone toe surgery that could keep him sidelined into training camp.
Three other rookie running backs are considered likely first rounders – Darren McFadden, Felix Jones and Rashard Mendenhall. But Stewart is a lot bigger than any of those guys. He looks like he could develop into another Rudi Johnson or Jamal Lewis.
Stewart likely would be used in combination with Parker and eventually emerge as the team’s No. 1 back. Najeh Davenport is a bigger back who was used as a change-of-pace guy last year, but he doesn’t have Stewart’s ability. In this article, by the way, it is mentioned that Davenport is unlikely to face a league suspension after being found not guilty of domestic violence charges earlier in the week.
