Dead Colt bounce

Posted Oct. 27 at 01:49 PM

The Colts gave up 62 points at New Orleans. They seemingly hardly showed up, letting the Saints, er, “march” up and down the field.

But does that mean the Colts are now just a little more than a speedbump, who’ll be giving up 35-38 points per game the rest of the way? Or maybe it’s the opposite: as poorly as they played last week, they’ll practice harder and play harder in their upcoming game against the Titans.

We’ve been down this road many time before, of course. Below is the list of the 30 previous teams that gave up 55 or more points in a game. It shows how they did in their NEXT game. Did they get blown out? Or did they play much better?

The numbers suggest that it’s far more like Indianapolis will improve. I think stockbrokers might call it a “dead cat bounce”.

Nevertheless, the last 30 teams in the same position as the Colts actually went 18-12 in their next games. And they allowed an average of only 21.3 points in those games.

So purely off the numbers, you wouldn’t expect that the Titans would effortlessly roll to a big win when these teams play on Sunday. The Colts are up to a 9-point underdog in this game, and I believe the handicappers would describe that as “good line value”.
