Stafford bad -- but not that bad

Posted Nov. 13 at 08:43 PM

Matthew Stafford had the weird game on Sunday in Chicago. He finished with 329 passing yards, but he also tossed 4 interceptions, including a pair returned for touchdowns. His passer rating was only 46.3.

So we had to check the numbers. Was this the worst-ever game by a 300-yard passer?

It is not. Not even close.

Brian Sipe (1983 Browns), Warren Moon and even Josh Freeman (two years ago) all had games with passer ratings under 30. (That’s difficult; if you simply throw the ball into the ground on every play, you get a 39.6).

Since the move to 16-game season in 1978, 41 times a quarterback has thrown for 300-plus yards and finished with a passer rating under 50

So Stafford had a horrible game on Sunday, but he can’t file a claim for all-time bad.

The kind of this category, by the way, is Kerry Collins. He’s done it three times.

Billy Joe Tolliver (1989) goes down as the the worst 300-yard quarterback who actually managed to win his game.
