History is stacked against Jeff Fisher

Posted Jan. 13 at 12:25 PM

The Rams are hiring Jeff Fisher to be their coach. That’s unusual – a guy who’s been a coach forever at one franchise, then taking over another. It doesn’t happen often, and when it does the results are almost always disappointing.

In this case, Fisher went 142-120 at Tennessee. For much of that time, he was kind of stuck behind Peyton Manning and the Colts, but the record is the record. He made the playoffs in only 6 of 17 seasons. They had the one run to the Super Bowl loss against the Rams (the team he’ll now coach), otherwise he was 2-5 in playoff games.

So his resume comes in a notch behind almost all of the guys you’ll see listed below.

Below you’ll find the “next team” numbers of other guys who have coached for 10-plus years at one spot. It shows how they did at their next job.

We’re talking about a combined 39 seasons for these coaches (most of whom are legendary). Only 13 winning seasons, and a 4-11 record in the postseason. Dan Reeves is the only dusted off coach who took his new team to a Super Bowl (where he lost to his original franchise). Joe Gibbs is the only other retread who won a playoff game.

Every case and situation is different, of course. The current-day Rams at least have a franchise-type quarterback in place and hold the second pick of the draft. But the historical numbers don’t look good for Fisher.
