A player better than anybody available in the 2008 draft is about to change teams. Kansas City is talking with the Bucs and Vikings about deals that would include Pro Bowl defensive end Jared Allen, according to the Kansas City Star and other news outlets.
Like the other standout defensive end in the state of Missouri – Leonard Little – Allen has had off-field problems with drinking and driving. He was suspended for the first two games of last season by the league. But like Little (at least when he was in prime), Allen is a dominating, disruptive force. He led the league in sacks last season.
Allen is a free agent, but Kansas City has him tagged as a franchise player. The Star indicates Allen likely will wind up with Minnesota or Tampa Bay, and he’d give a huge boost to either of those teams. The Bucs made the playoffs last season, while the Vikings just missed the postseason and could have the league’s best defensive line with Allen joining the feared tackle tandem of Kevin Williams and Pat Williams.
This deal may be completed before the weekend is over. If it’s to the Vikings, then they’ll become the favorites to win the topsy-turvy NFC North.
The complete article appears in today’s Kansas City Star.
