Fantasy News
Below are the lists showing the all-time standings in our Experts Poll competition. This doesn’t show how they fared in the 2011 version of the competition (which I announced last week). This shows their cumulative work over the last 20 years.
We started the poll in 1991 – the first in the industry – and started scoring the poll a year later. So we’ve got the results of 20 different polls to work with. No one expert, of course, has particpated in all of the polls, but many of them have been in four, five times or more.
Each year there have been 15-25 experts in the competition. We use a complex scoring system in grade the poll (in short: every player your rank in the top 20 counts towards your score; the higher you rank him, the more heavily his production counts).
The below figures don’t include player stats but are instead built from where each expert finishes each year. Scott Pianowski of Yahoo!, for example, won this year’s poll. So he gets a 24-0 win-loss record in games for the 2011 version (he gets one “win” for each of the experts he beat in a head-to-head comparison). Pretzel May of FantasyDraftMaster.com finished in second, so he gets a 23-1 record (he overperformed 23 experts but lost to Pianowski).
If you follow this process for every experts and all 20 years of the competition, you get the results below.
I’m listing the guys in various ways, because it’s harder than it looks. Most notably, do you rank the individuals? Or do you rank the companies they work for? Bob Henry, for example, used to work for Red Eye Sports. Now he writes for Footballguys.com (who previously used Joe Bryant in the poll)? So do you combine Henry’s work from two different companies? Or do you combine his work with Bryant and call it a “Footballguys” entry? And we’ve got the same deal with Fantasy Football Champs, who’ve used Jon Millman, Ian Millman and Bo Mitchell on their entries.
Pianowski is one of the all-time leaders, and he’s worked for a variety of companies. Right now, he’s with Yahoo! Sports. So do we list him as Pianowski the individual? Or do we list his three numbers with three different companies separately? It’s harder than it looks.
So we show the data in different ways. We have one chart where we stay true to the individuals. Pianowski and Henry are treated as single beings, and their numbers appear only once.
We also have separate charts showing additional info, however. On those, we add in companies who’ve used separate experts (Footballguys.com, FF Champs, etc.). At least for now, however, I am not also providing the company-by-company breakdowns of the numerous guys who’ve written for different publications.
For all of the charts below, I’ve set the cutoff at 50 career games (combined wins and losses). The first two charts show active participants – guys who participated in 2011). The final two show anybody who’s been in this deal in the last 20 years.
We’re not, by the way, suggesting that anybody should take these rankings too seriously. With this scoring system, there’s a tremendous amount of luck/chance involved with injuries. Anybody who was high on Peyton Manning, Jamaal Charles and Nate Kaeding last year, for example, potentially got killed in those categories, even though those guys were relatively logical, solid choices. And some experts take the competition far more seriously than others, playing for a good score (rather than aggressively taking chances, trying to hit on a breakout player).
It is what it is, as they say, and I thank all of the experts for giving readers a chance to sample some of their opinions and rankings.
