Factoid
We’re seeing teams use tight ends more. Rob Gronkowski caught a record (for a tight end) 17 touchdowns, and Jimmy Graham caught 11. Four other tight ends caught at least 7.
It’s not just touchdowns, either. They’re finishing with more yards and catches as well.
With the success the Patriots have had with the tandem of Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez, I think you’ll see more teams trying to make more use of formations with double tight ends in 2012 and beyond.
What does this mean for fantasy leagues? Maybe it’s time to think about using two starting tight ends instead of just one. With just one tight end per team, it might be too easily for teams to settle for late-round picks at that position – it makes tight ends more like kickers and defenses.
In leagues requiring teams to start three wide receivers, it probably makes sense to mandate that teams must start two tight ends. Then those teams that use early picks on the likes of Gronkowski and Graham would still potentially be in the hunt for Witten, Finley and Hernandez later on.
