Gotta Hand It to the Manning Boys

Posted Jul. 16 at 03:21 AM

Eli Manning hasn’t yet proven to be in the same league as his older brother, and maybe he never will. There’s one area, though, where he was second only to Peyton a year ago: passing around the goal line.

Among quarterbacks who attempted at least 10 passes inside the 5-yard line in 2006, Peyton threw the most touchdowns (16, on 27 attempts). Coming in second was Eli, who threw 8 TDs on his 15 attempts.

Arguably the worst quarterback in that area? Surprisingly, Drew Brees, who attempted more passes inside the 5-yard line than anyone but the elder Manning, but failed to complete more than two-thirds of them. Only Chad Pennington, who attempted just 10 passes to Brees’ 22, had a worse percentage inside the 5.

The numbers for quarterbacks with 10-plus attempts in that area, sorted by TD tosses, are presented below.
