Derrick Mason and Mark Clayton are good possession receivers, but they’re not big enough or fast enough to challenge defenses downfield.
Certainly, they’re not scoring enough touchdowns. They haven’t in recent years, anyway, with a suspect quarterbacking situation, that’s unlikely to change in 2008.
The following chart shows the 36 wide receivers who’ve caught at least 150 passes in the last three years. The players are ordered by how many of those passes they turn into touchdowns. Randy Moss and Terrell Owens, for example, are at the top, scoring a touchdown, on average, for every 6 receptions.
Mason and Clayton are both near the bottom, collectively averaging only 1 TD for about every 24 pass receptions.
