Mike Martz: passing the ball (or not)

Posted Mar. 27 at 10:00 AM

The Bears have had Mike Martz as their offensive coordinator for the last two years. He’s the ultimate crazy mad scientist of the passing game.

Shocking, then, that they gave up on him so quickly. They threw the ball all over the place for his first two months on the job (back in 2010) but since then they’ve passed the ball less than any team in the league. They went ultra conservative in the second half of 2010, winning the NFC North. Then they stayed with more of a close-to-the-vest offensive approach last year.

This isn’t the Mike Martz we saw in St. Louis, Detroit and San Francisco.

Now he’s gone. He retired (likely before he was forced out). It’s a safe bet, at least in my opinion, that the Bears will stay with a conservative-type offensive philosophy under the new leaders of their offense, Mike Tice and QB coach Jeremy Bates.
