Hasselbeck / TDs and interceptions

Posted Mar. 28 at 02:48 PM

The Titans tried (but failed) to sign Peyton Manning. That leaves them with Matt Hasselbeck and Jake Locker at quarterback. The plan is to have those two compete for the job in camp.

I’m guessing Locker will be the guy. Not that I have a lot of confidence in him. He was awfully rough and unpolished as a passer at Washington, and he really didn’t do much in his rookie year. Will he ever develop into a big-time NFL starter? I can’t say with any confidence that he will.

But Hasselbeck will be 37 in September, and it looks like his time has passed. He faded in the second half of last season, he’s had problems staying healthy, and he struggled at the end of his stay in Seattle. He went only 12-23 as a starter in his final three years there. It’s time, it seems.

Among quarterbacks who’ve started at least half the time over the last four years, Hasselbeck has the worst ratio of touchdowns to interceptions. He’s the only one of those 24, in fact, who’s thrown more interceptions than touchdowns. In those 51 starts, Hasselbeck has thrown 52 TDs and 58 interceptions.

My guess is that when the Titans take the field for their opener, it will be with Locker behind center.
