No. 3 pick the next to be dealt?

Posted Mar. 30 at 07:20 AM

When Washington traded up for St. Louis' 2nd overall pick in the upcoming draft, that initially seemed to be the extent of the early-pick trades. But not so fast, since there might be a battle for Minnesota's pick at No. 3 overall, as well.

Trent Richardson is considered far and away the draft's best running back, and Ryan Tannehill has emerged as the clear No. 3 quarterback (behind Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III, who will go at 1-2 overall). The Browns, picking at No. 4, the Bucs at No. 5, and even the Rams at No. 6 are apparently big fans of Richardson. The Browns are also very interested in Tannehill.

This article from ESPN Cleveland talks at length about Cleveland's fondness for both players. It's possible the Browns will stay put and simply take whichever one is certain to be there, or perhaps even have their pick of the two. The Vikings are generally connected to Southern Cal offensive tackle Matt Kalil, the draft's best tackle and a player that would fill a major need for them.

But Tampa Bay, sitting at No. 5, reportedly "loves" Richardson, and the Dolphins, at No. 8, may want to ensure they get Tannehill before the Browns pick.

Don't be surprised, in other words, if the Vikings -- who like the Rams have needs all over the place -- are the next team to trade out of a top-3 draft spot for a slew of draft picks. At present, the perceived difference between Tannehill and the rest of the draft's quarterbacks (after the top two) and Richardson and the rest of the draft's running backs, is that significant.
