Do skewed offenses tend to repeat?

Posted Apr. 19 at 09:25 AM

The Cowboys finished last year with the league’s most pass-heavy offense, at least in terms of scoring. Of the 38 TDs scored by their offense, 33 came on passes. That’s the most-skewed ratio by any offense since Arizona put up a 21-2 mark in 2005.

But is that a sign the same thing will happen again in 2012? Should we all be shying away from DeMarco Murray?

Not necessarily. Below is the list showing the 36 teams who’ve scored over 80 percent of their touchdowns on passes in the last 30 years. For this group, only a third of the teams the next season again scored over 70 percent (not 80, 70) of their touchdowns on passes.

The NFL average is about 61 percent. For this group, it fell from a collective 82 percent down to 68 percent. So, a little more passing than usual, but not a wildly pass-crazy bunch.
