Fantasy Index Scheduletron -- strength-of-schedule analysis
The Rams stumbled and bumbled to a 2-14 record last year. I will point out, however, that they played a remarkably tough schedule. Their opponents went a combined 151-105.
Now, 14 of those wins came against the Rams themselves, but even if you toss out those games St. Louis’ opponents were a combined 137-103. That ties as the hardest schedule of the last five years. Perhaps with an easier schedule, this would have been more of a 6-10 type team.
We keep the Strength of Schedule information on file (at least dating back to 1993), and the slate of games the Rams played last year grades out as one of the toughest ever (see the chart below).
Should we have seen this coming? Not in our eyes. Nobody envisioned the 49ers emerging as a league power – a team that easily could have gone to the Super Bowl. Buoyed by two games against San Francisco, St. Louis was supposed to play a schedule that would be slightly easier than the league average.
