Bad defenses -- yards and points

Posted Jun. 14 at 10:55 AM

Look at the two charts below. I can’t quite explain them.

The first chart shows the 28 teams that have allowed over 28 points per game since the move to the 16-game schedule in 1978. You see only two 2011 teams in there – the Bucs and Vikings.

The second chart shows the 28 teams that have allowed the most yards. Gross yards (not including sacks). There are FIVE 2011 teams in that group.

Are some teams seemingly figuring out how to allow yards but not give up points? Some teams seem to be better at getting turnovers and stopping teams in the red zone.

Not that three of those teams that allowed a bunch of yards were also very good. The Patriots and Giants wound up in the Super Bowl, while the Packers went 15-1 in the regular season.

They say that “Defense wins championships”. But that doesn’t seem to be quite as true as it used to be.
