How can the No. 1 kicker be anybody except David Akers? That’s what I’m asking myself as I look over the entries for the Fantasy Index Open.
In this poll of 92 readers and analysts, Akers takes a back seat to Stephen Gostkowski. To me, that’s really odd. Akers chipped in 166 points last year, and the 49ers looked awfully content to settle for field goals when they were inside the red zone.
With Gostkowski, you know the Patriots are going to score plenty of touchdowns.
Whatever.
There were a couple of other surprises. Matt Prater finished 8th. I have him lower. I think Peyton Manning will help that offense, but it also should mean the Broncos are scoring more touchdowns rather than field goals.
And I see Randy Bullock way down at 20th. I realize he’s a rookie kicker, but the Texans should run away with the AFC South this year, and I think that will greatly benefit Bullock. He should be much higher in my opinion.
The Fantasy Index Open is just like the Experts Poll, but it’s open to everyone. The winner will earn a berth alongside the industry pros in the regular Experts Poll in the 2013 edition of the magazine.
The Fantasy Index Open champion also will win a huge, really cool trophy fromAffordable Trophies.

How can the top kicker be someone else? Easy! It depends on the scoring format. I'm in a distance league and I'm sure the top kicker in our league will be Janikowski, yet again!

By what scoring system did Janikowski beat Akers last year?

Speaking for myself, I dropped Bullock (and a few other players like him) because I just wasn't 100% sure he'd get the job. Probably that's overly conservative of me, but for a competition where we have to commit in June, I didn't want to rely on anyone who might spend the year on a practice squad.

I agree with the last comment. There is no guarantee that Bullock wins the job, which is why I put him low.
