Peyton Manning / avoiding sacks

Posted Jul. 14 at 10:15 AM

Peyton Manning has the neck issue. After undergoing multiple surgeries, it’s clear that he could be one good hit away from never playing again – there’s some risk involved.

But Manning is also maybe the best quarterback in the league at staying out of harm’s way. He doesn’t run, and he’s one of the best at getting rid of the ball before pass rushers get to him.

Look at the chart below. It shows all teams that have allowed 20 or fewer sacks in the last 10 years. Manning has done it in seven of his last nine seasons (9 of 12 if you want to go back even farther). The rest of the league combined has done it only 20 times in 10 years (that’s 20 out of 311 chances).

So while Manning’s neck is a concern, it doesn’t look likely that he’ll take many big hits from opposing defenses.

I think the neck issue Manning has is misunderstood. It is strictly a nerve generation issue. It is not a pinched nerve, muscular issue, herniated disc, etc. From everything I've read from medical experts, he is not at any additional risk from impact related trauma than any other QB. The issue is simply regaining full strength and mobility. More similar to having your foot fall asleep (granted, for a year and half!) than having a sprained ankle which could be hurt worse. The fantasy risk is a matter of, has he fully recoverd and will he continue to have deterioration of the nerves in that area?
