Defensive Notes
There has been speculation about Pro Bowl corner Charles Woodson moving to safety for a few years now. That became a reality last week, but will it last?
Green Bay released Charlie Peprah, who started all last season, and put Woodson at first-team strong safety to open training camp. Woodson's cornerback spot was filled by Jarrett Bush.
Here's the problem: Bush will be overmatched as a starting cornerback, and the next option, Sam Shields, struggled there late last season as well. By strengthening themselves at safety, Green Bay may be weakening themselves too greatly at corner, at least until someone takes control of that spot. Second-rounder Casey Hayward might be that player; it's unlikely he'll be worse than Bush.
In our updated IDP rankings out tomorrow, Woodson will climb some; he'll make more tackles at safety, while still having the playmaking opportunities that have been key to his IDP value. But we're watching to see if Green Bay's secondary is really better off with Woodson at safety. (If he moves back to corner, M.D. Jennings could be next in line at safety.)
