Andy's Week 1 picks for the Fantasy Index SuperLeague

Posted Sep. 04 at 05:33 AM

We hope you'll join us in the free Fantasy Index SuperLeague for the 2012 season. The league and all the details can be found at this link.

Each week, participants will pick their best lineup of 2 quarterbacks, 2 running backs, 3 wide receivers, 2 tight ends, and 2 kickers. I've spent some time thinking about it, and here is the lineup I am planning on submitting.

Quarterbacks: Aaron Rodgers, Cam Newton. Rodgers hosts San Francisco's defense, which will totally shut down Green Bay's running game, but was pretty soft against the pass last year. No reason to think Rodgers won't start off the 2012 season in great fashion. Cam Newton put up 8 total touchdowns in two games against the Bucs last season. I like him more this week than Drew Brees (vs. Washington), Tom Brady (at Tenn.) and Matthew Stafford (vs. St.L.), the other players I considered.

Running backs: LeSean McCoy, Darren McFadden. McCoy faces a Cleveland defense that was awful against the run a year ago. McFadden, when healthy and in the lineup, is simply too good to bench. I may regret benching Arian Foster, who's also a top-3 choice hosting Miami, but will roll with these two players.

Wide receivers: If I had a failing last year, it was in getting a little too cute with these selections. There are only so many go-to wideouts in the game, and I suspect I'll be starting the ones there are most weeks. Calvin Johnson, obviously. Julio Jones, who seems primed for a breakout year. And Andre Johnson, who I do not personally draft, but who's healthy now and facing a Miami team he's scored against in four straight meetings. I considered Dez Bryant, Jordy Nelson and Victor Cruz, but am comfortable with these selections.

Tight ends: Jimmy Graham, Aaron Hernandez. I imagine I'll start Graham and a Patriots tight end most weeks. Not sure how I could justify doing anything different. Picking Hernandez this week just because Gronkowski may get more defensive attention in the opener, until Hernandez blows up.

Kickers: Heck, I don't know. Give me the kickers from the likely winners in a couple of high-scoring games, Garrett Hartley and Mason Crosby. Probably the strategy I'll use most every week.

OK, I won't bust your chops on this week 1 thing. Everything looks so good on paper. Personally, I do not like Gronk much this year. Why, because of Beli-Shanahan. Oh, did I combine two coaches names? Hernandez should be go to. Wes Welker will be invisible....did the pats broadcast it? Kickers and D/st are week to week. Just follow the match-ups. You don't even have to draft one and you can do well. I must say though, I was blown away that the Bills did so poorly on D. If I were a pro-prognosticator I would be embarrassed. Ja
