Andy Richardson
I have kind of a love-hate relationship with the NFL Red Zone Channel. On the one hand, I hate it, because you don't get the proper ebb and flow of each game watching things that way, and I generally have to go and watch my recordings of the games the next day anyway. On the other hand, I love it, because I cannot stand to watch commercials.
So yesterday I spent most of the afternoon on that Red Zone Channel, seeing bits and pieces (and scoring plays, of course) from almost every early game. Then I turned to Patriots-Broncos, like most of America, and watched all of that one. (Conveniently, almost all of the other late games were ugly blowouts.) For those of you unlucky enough to miss the action for some reason (attending a game? Watching just one team? Apple picking?), here were the highlights and lowlights of the day.
Dolphins at Bengals: Don't look now but Miami is going to win some games this year. Good defense. (Great run defense.) Impressive young quarterback. Running back having a really nice second career in Reggie Bush, who had a pretty impressive touchdown run. yards per carry poor, but Bengals respectable against the run when healthy. ... Nine more catches for A.J. Green. Every-week start in case you hadn't moved him into that category yet.
Packers at Colts: Everyone believes in Andrew Luck now, right? Not that Colts fans will forget Peyton Manning as easy as Broncos fans are forgetting Tim Tebow, but they're going to have a lot of fun watching him for the next few years. Fantastic game-winning drive, great throws and decisions throughout even while getting knocked around pretty good. Guy can scramble, too. Anyway, this game will probably be replayed on NFL Network this week, so I recommend you check it out. ... I traded away Jordy Nelson in a deal involving Julio Jones this week. Whatever the reason, it's just not happening with him and Rodgers this year. When you see a better rapport with James Jones, you worry. Not a believer right now. ... Another drop followed by an injury for Jermichael Finley. If he misses time, D.J. Williams is the deep league claim. Cedric Benson also left due to injury, giving Alex Green a chance to look like he belongs in the NFL. Running back scarcity being what it is, you have to consider him if the Benson injury is serious. James Starks a healthy scratch. ... Monster game for Reggie Wayne. Starting to think that Charles Woodson's move to safety is because he can't cover anyone without holding them anymore. Green Bay's secondary has some problems, again, and I'm not sure they're going to get fixed. Wayne should have had another touchdown but was dragged down by Woodson, who wasn't flagged. Man those refs favor the Packers! Just kidding.
Ravens at Kansas City: Please note that both of Matt Cassel's interceptions bounced off Dwayne Bowe's hands. Brutal loss for Kansas City fans, since Cassel (prior to getting sandwiched and knocked out of the game) fumbled away a snap at the goal line, and they had another touchdown wiped out by a penalty. And in the final minute a Joe Flacco fumble near his own goal line was erased by a quick whistle. In a 3-point loss. Jamaal Charles is awesome; Shaun Draughn, who came in to spell Charles after he ripped off a big play, is just a guy. And he lost a fumble. Peyton Hillis, when healthy, should be the No. 2 again, but it's Charles' show. Shame he's not on a better team. ... Not much to say about the Ravens offense, which could basically just stand around and let Kansas City beat themselves. Kansas City defense, healthier now, is also starting to look more like what we expected to start the season.
Browns at Giants: It was all Browns early, like several Giants games this year; slow starts are something Tom Coughlin may be discussing this week. But after an impressive Trent Richardson touchdown run, and a sweet 62-yard bomb from Brandon Weeden to Josh Gordon -- that's right, three rookies scoring for the Browns in the first quarter -- it was all Eli Manning, Victor Cruz and Ahmad Bradshaw. And oh yeah, Giants are doing some nice drafting these days, because both Reuben Randle and David Wilson chipped in some catches, yards and a long Wilson touchdown. Browns are missing some players on defense, but that's now three times this year that New York's offense has been pretty much unstoppable. A lot of talent, there. Feared I'd have to apologize to the guy I told to start Stevan Ridley over Bradshaw, but fortunately Ridley went on to have a really good game, too. ... For the Browns, I still expect new ownership to clean house at the end of the year. But for one day, they had to like seeing Richardson and Gordon look like franchise-type talents. (Jury out on Weeden.) Gordon only caught 2 passes, both for touchdowns, but he was targeted a bunch of other times and looked legit out there. Not saying you necessarily rush out to grab him, but the future looked better after today. Nice game for Jordan Norwood, too.
Eagles at Steelers: Considering the problem Michael Vick seems to have with fumbles, maybe the Eagles shouldn't call so many quarterback draws? I didn't see every second of this game, but a lot of plays I was did see involved Vick scrambling up the middle and fumbling, including one that was overturned, one that wasn't, one at the goal line, one during the post game handshake....ugly stuff. All things considered it was impressive they almost won, but that's a pretty good defense they have. Year after year the Eagles seem to have problems turning plays around the goal line into touchdowns rather than field goals (at best) or turnovers (at worst). I dunno, just seems they might want to do some things differently down there. ... Am thinking this week's Ask the Experts question might have to do with these guys coming back from torn ACLs. Granted it's Week 5, but there are now three backs who tore their ACLs last season, two of them very late, and all of them are playing and looking pretty good right now, most recently Rashard Mendenhall. If you started Ben Roethlisberger and lost a narrow game, skip this next part. If you faced him and won, keep reading. Mendenhall's touchdown "run" was ruled a lateral; it was awfully close to a forward pass. Jerricho Cotchery tripped over his own feet after another catch near the goal line, then Mike Wallace was held (not called) on the next play. Anyway, nice win for the Steelers.
Falcons at Washington: The Matt Ryan to Julio Jones, Tony Gonzalez and Roddy White show continues. One of those receivers will get left out of the fun each week and this week it was White's turn, but if you've got any one of these guys you can't complain too much. Next week, Oakland! The fun should continue. ... Robert Griffin, well, we've talked about the injury risk with him. Suffered a concussion, a hard hit but not a dirty one. These running quarterbacks, and I realize this is easy to say, but they've got to just get out of bounds if they have the chance, because they're too important to be giving way in close games to the likes of Kirk Cousins. (Although in fairness he did a nice Rex Grossman impression: long touchdown, 2 picks.) ... Alfred Morris continues to impress. Thank heavens I picked him up in my dynasty league even when the "official depth chart" listed him third-string. And drafted him everywhere. hope you did too. ... One highlight (unless you were facing them): Ryan to Gonzalez was ruled just short of the end zone. So the next play, instead of, I dunno, letting the fullback carry it in or something, Ryan went back to Gonzalez for the touchdown, even while the receiver was dragged down by a defender. Nice to see.
Broncos at Patriots: Big game for Stevan Ridley, but when New England was running out the clock late, he lost a fumble -- tough play where he had the ball ripped out while nearly down, although I'm not sure Bill Belichick cares about such nuances. Ridley owners this week will be nervous, so maybe it's a good time to trade for him. Or avoid him, since Brandon Bolden might be next week's starter. Bottom line, Belichick doesn't care about you and will happily use multiple running backs each week (Shane Vereen even scored yesterday), so it doesn't take much, presumably, for him to change his mind. Aside from that, nice day for Ridley, so for now I'm guessing he'll be fine as the starter going forward. ... Rough day for Willis McGahee, who kind of ruined what could have been a fantastic Peyton Manning finish by dropping a ridiculously easy reception on a late 4th and 1and then fumbling it away with Denver on the verge of making it 31-28 in the final minutes. Big numbers for Manning, anyway, and at this point it's fair to wonder if anyone can stop New England. Maybe the Giants in the Super Bowl? Nothing else leaps to mind.
Chargers at Saints: The Saints aren't going to win anything this year, but Drew Brees is sure going to be a part of a lot of fantasy titles. He's moving the team up and down the field as much as ever, week after week. If you've got him, you're probably doing a lot better than New Orleans, or the people who drafted Rodgers, Newton, etc. ... Maybe it's just because he's my dynasty quarterback, but I feel kind of bad for Philip Rivers. His head coaches have been Marty Schottenheimer and Norv Turner, and although I can't prove it, I feel like he'd have been on the right side of more close games and had more playoff success with somebody else calling the shots all these years. Last night Rivers was throwing to Ronnie Brown on the final drive. I don't know why Ryan Mathews, who ripped off big chunks of yardage whenever he was on the field, wasn't out there, but he could have helped. ... Robert Meachem lends credence to the idea that players perform better against their former teams. It's crazy that he and Rivers had no rapport for two months, including the exhibitions, then connect for 2 TDs last night. If you started him, congrats. I endorsed him last week mostly because of the lousy opponent, and maybe that's really all there was to it. ... Disappointing game if you started Sproles, Graham, or Jackie Battle. The Battle thing was a reasonable possibility with Mathews the greater talent, the Sproles and Graham outings not as much. Guys get hurt, what can you do.
Monday, Monday: There's absolutely nothing upon which to base any optimism regarding the Jets in this matchup, but strange things happen in the NFL all the time. Maybe they return a pick or fumble, block a punt, complete a Statue of Liberty play or something, I don't know. Most likely you're very happy if you have Arian Foster and the Texans defense going tonight, and that will be the story of the game. I'll call it Texans 27, Jets 13 and move along to next week.

As a Ridley owner, I am very nervous especially since I tried to claim Bolden last week, but I lost out on the claim. I started getting nervous as soon as the ball popped out. Ball security is so important to The Hoodie that his feature back prior to this year was a marginal talent at best whose only strong point was that he never fumbled. We can only hope that Ridley's talent will win out, because he's clearly the most talented RB they have. What are your thoughts on Vincent Brown? I picked him up yesterday after seeing that his recovery is going well and he could be back by Week 8. Rumor had it that he was going to be featured in SD offense until he got hurt. I have WR byes in Weeks 10 and 11 on a team where I just lost Amendola and I'm hoping to plug him in.

I like Brown, but Norv Turner's use of guys like Battle and Brown in the running game are examples of a coach who tends to favor veterans over youngsters, so I don't think he's going to bench Meachem or perhaps even slot guy Eddie Royal in favor of Brown right away. I think he's a hold guy in case someone else gets injured, but he's probably no better than 3 or 4 in the pecking order. At least Ridley's fumble wasn't a weak one like McGahee's, that's the best you can say I guess. I also missed out on Bolden, although considering New England also used plenty of Woodhead and even let Vereen score, the handcuff situation is not that clear cut.

Andy, did you forget about the Houston Texans? I'de say they are a pretty well rounded team and will give the Pats a run for their money in the AFC. And I'de have to add Atlanta to the mix in the NFC. Peter, I'm in the same boat as you as I am a Ridley owner myself. The Hoodie is a pretty smart football guy albeit a LITTLE finicky...I've got to believe that he'll see it your way and that Ridley's talent and previous play will keep him the job. I like the Texans a lot. Their Week 14 matchup at New England could be huge (especially if those two run away with their respective divisions; it could decide the AFC's top seed). I mentioned the Giants only because it's happened in a pair of recent Super Bowls, that's all.

I love your product, but dang you're Jordy Nelson ranking is killing me! At this point he seems better suited on the sidelines in sweatpants with a gatorade bottle in each hand...
Posted by ANDY RICHARDSON | Oct. 08 at 07:24 AM
Best guess for what's happening with Jordy is that he was better when he was the perceived No. 2 (and matched up with a lesser cornerback, perhaps) a year ago than as the No. 1 (with Jennings either sidelined or limited). It's frustrating, but it seems he's not a true No. 1 guy.
Posted by TREY STRICKLAND | Oct. 08 at 07:39 AM
so I suppose he's worth holding onto until Jennings returns? Do you see Kenny Brittle getting healthy and making an impact at some point soon? hahaha thanks spell-check that's a good one! (I wrote Britt ;)
Posted by ANDY RICHARDSON | Oct. 08 at 07:59 AM
I do not see Matt Hasselbeck as a viable NFL quarterback anymore, so my feelings on Britt are tied to Locker's health, which is unclear right now. It's apparent that the Titans are one of the worst teams in the league, and once they're sitting at 2-8 or whatever, will Britt still be interested in what's going on? Not a big Britt fan. I would trade Nelson (in fact, did last week) if you can get good value; he'll have some good weeks in that offense. It just seems clear he won't be as good as he was last season.
Posted by TREY STRICKLAND | Oct. 08 at 09:04 AM
Thanks Andy! Unfortunately I think Jordy has about zero trade value right now; I'll try to dump him off on someone after he has a good game ;)

Andy, thanks. One other observation I would humbly sumbit from the San Diego game: Antonio Gates is old, fat and slow. Believe me, I share FFI's pain for falling for the preseason hype, but it's time for all of us to admit it - he's terrible. If not for name recognition he'd be sitting on the bench behind Rosario, and he's hardly anything special. Please ask Ian to stop ranking him and tempting me to use him one more time. Thanks again.

Hi Andy, I need to get in my waiver claim today, and I have the #2 priority no thanks to Chris Johnson and Jordy Nelson. I need to win most of the rest of my games to make the playoffs. Who has more value? William Powell now that Williams is out for the season in Arizona, or Alex Green with Benson out at least 8 weeks? Powell looked really good in the preseason but was playing against soft defenses. He looks like he'll be the #1 back in AZ though. A Packers back probably holds more value with the recent game plans and upcoming schedule for the Packers, but I do not know if Green will get most of the touches or if we have to worry about Starks. Please reply today if possible. Thanks!

Brett - I guess Powell is the better bet. Haven't seen much out of Green to think he'll be any good, and at best he'll probably share work with Starks and lose goal-line chances to Kuhn. At least Powell *might* be featured. I don't think either guy is going to be a fantasy star, however; neither is going to rip off 100-yard, 1-TD stat lines each week.

I agree with you about the Red Zone channel, Andy. My dad was out visiting a few weeks ago, and we were watching RZ and Pops said "This is the stupidest thing I've ever seen. You don't know the game situation, how each offense or defense has been playing up to this point, or even the score or how much time is left until you look at the scoreboard. Just pick a game and watch the ticker!" So we picked 1 game, and it was one of the more enjoyable football Sundays I've had in awhile (granted, I'm sure watching ball with Pops had a lot to do with it.) Anyway, the last couple weeks I have shied away from RZ. After having it the last couple seasons I didn't realize just how different it was, I guess. (Not to mention that Andrew Siciliano has one of the more annoying voices in broadcasting. And those EARS...yeesh.)
Posted by PETER DEBIASE | Oct. 10 at 06:50 AM
Scott: I agree with you on Siciliano, but unless there is more than one anchor on Red Zone Channel, Scott Hanson is the host of the show. Andy: Up to this point, this is the worst year I can remember for getting help off the wire. On a team where I have RB depth (Lynch, Ridley, S-Jax, Dancing CJ, Mendy), what are your thoughts on dropping CJ to try and claim Bolden? I've been starting Lynch and Ridley every week and Mendy's performance was very encouraging last week so I could use him and A-Jax @ Flex. Lynch, Ridley and S-Jax are on the no drop list and there are no trades permitted. Also, in another league (where my RB's are McCoy, Ridley, Don. Brown, B. Powell and Ingram), Tate, W. Powell, L. Stephens-Howling, Green, Starks, Blount and Wilson are FA's. Ingram has got to go. The question is whether any of the other six are better than what I have? Tate is the best talent, but the toe injury is troubling. I kinda like The Hyphen also. Even though the consensus is that AZ will pick up another RB, he should be on the field a lot because they will probably be playing from behind and he will continue as the third down back even if they pick someone else up. Both are standard scoring leagues. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Posted by ANDY RICHARDSON | Oct. 10 at 08:34 AM
So SJax is on the no-drop list but CJ isn't? Surprising. Regardless, I would rather have CJ than Bolden. But that might just be me. Since you have Ridley, i could see it. Second league, I do not like Ingram or B.Powell. I would rather have almost any of the other backs. I will go with W.Powell and Blount as the top two choices. Best chance to start and be featured at some point. Tate has the most upside, but the lowest floor, and he is hurt.

Andy...Thanks for all your help, each and every week. It seems that the Donald Brown injury report came too late for inclusion into the most recent weekly cheat sheet. I noticed that Brown got a lot of love on the sheet for this week, playing the NYJ rush defense. How far down the list does Vick Ballard drop on the cheat sheet? I need RB help on a PPR league, and currently Ballard, Alex Green, William Powell, Howling, Starks, DWilson are all available. Doug Martin is also available on the wire, but it would require using a #2 waiver priority on him. Thoughts?
Posted by ANDY RICHARDSON | Oct. 10 at 12:29 PM
Doug - you'd know better than I how significant giving up that waiver priority is. Strictly in terms of the rest of the season, I'd most like to have Martin, who we have no reason to think won't be the starter for most of the remaining games (which isn't the case with the other options). I like Ballard a little bit more than the other guys; we know he'll start and get most of the carries for the next couple of weeks, and that's not true of the other options.
