Jacksonville's awful running game

Posted Nov. 11 at 07:21 AM

The Jaguars are awful right now. Historically awful – biblically bad.

The passing game is garbage. Blaine Gabbert seems to have no ability to complete passes downfield (everything is dink and dunk). But here I will focus on the running game, which is maybe even worse.

They were at home on Thursday night, playing against a Colts team with a really bad run defense. But they still couldn’t run the ball. Rashad Jennings carried the ball 11 times for only 27 yards.

In each of the six games, the Jaguars have run for under 70 yards. That’s not just Jennings. Half of those games were with Maurice Jones-Drew in the lineup.

It’s weird. There’s some talent on the offensive line. This isn’t a deal like in Philadelphia (where the Eagles have lost their top three blockers with season-ending injuries). The Jaguars ranked 12th in rushing last year. It’s scheme and playcalling, apparently.

However you slice it, that’s six games in a row under 70 rushing yards. I’ve looked through all of the numbers of the last 10 years, and that’s the longest streak by any team in the league. Only three times in the last five years, in fact, has any team gone more than three straight games under 70 yards.

MOST CONSECUTIVE GAMES UNDER 70 RUSHING YARDS (2002-12)
   No   Year
   6   2012   Jacksonville
   5   2008   Arizona
   5   2004   Oakland
   4   2005   Arizona
   4   2005   Tampa Bay
   4   2002   St. Louis
   4   2003   NY Jets
   4   2010   Denver
   4   2011   Washington

I'm hardly a film studier but I have to believe it's because Gabbert is so bad that defenses are shutting down the run daring Gabbert to beat them......and he can't
