Penalty Yards / last 10 years

Posted Jan. 03 at 12:04 PM

You might think, with the emphasis on protecting quarterbacks and receivers, that penalties would have increased this year. How many times have we seen drives kept alive with a hit against a defensiveless receiver? Or a hit termed too late or too rough against a quarterback?

But the numbers say otherwise.

Teams averaged 851 yards in the 2012 season. That’s pretty average in comparison with the last 10 years. In five of those 10 years, teams averaged MORE penalty yards.
