Math teacher wins defenses in Fantasy Index Open

Posted Jan. 09 at 03:20 PM

Fantasy Football is about numbers – understanding them and valuing them. So no surprise that the winner of the defenses portion of the Fantasy Index Open is a math teacher – Ty Tietjen of Brandon, South Dakota. He outscored the other 92 competitors in this category.

Ranking the Chicago Bears 2nd appears to have been Tietjen’s best pick. Using the scoring system of 6 points for touchdowns, 2 for takeaways and 1 for each sack, the Bears were the top-scoring defense in 2012. Tietjen ranked them 2nd, while much of the field had them as more of just a top-10 defense.

A reminder on how we score these things. You get a multiplier number ranging from 11 to 30 (depending on how high you rank the player), and that gets multiplied times the actual production. In this case, Tietjen got 5,481 points for the Bears (29 x 189). Somebody who ranked the Bears only 10th would 3,780 points (20 x 189). It’s complicated, but it’s a way of sifting through all the picks and labeling a winner.

The rest of the top 5 were also techies. Adam Thygeson is also a teacher, from Portland. Jim Bukowski took 3rd; he’s an accountant from Chicago. Jason Spann from St. Louis took 4th; he’s a software engineer. And Michael McAninch from Naperville, Ill., took 5th. He’s a network engineer.

Moishe Steigmann of Milwaukee is the overall leader after two positions have been scored.

The Fantasy Index Open is just like the Experts Poll that appears in the magazine, but it’s open to everyone. Anybody who wants can send in their picks (with a July 1 deadline, I believe), and then we score them and name a winner.

The champion will earn a spot in the Experts Poll in the 2013 edition of Fantasy Football Index magazine.

The winner will also earn a huge and really cool trophy from the team at Affordable Trophies. They joined on as a sponsor of this competition.
