Fanex draft nears midway point

Posted May. 21 at 05:28 PM

Another day of picks is in the bag in the Fanex draft. I had to sit out the eighth round, as part of the trade to move up and select Jay Cutler at 7.11. I don’t get that pick back until 11.07, which may be going with a committee of lesser guys at tight end.

Lots of wide receivers selected in the eighth round, including three Seahawks in one four-pick blitz – Deion Branch, Bobby Engram and Nate Burleson. In this point-per-catch format, I think Engram will be the best of those guys.

I’ll be picking early on Thursday. There’s only one more pick left before I’m back on the clock. Unless somebody has a better suggestion, I’ll go with a quarterback in that slot – David Garrard or Philip Rivers. Those guys are good enough that (with Cutler already in the fold) I’d be done at that position. Tony Holm is coming up soon, and I know he’ll be taking a quarterback, and others will be looking for their second quarterbacks soon as well.

And Garrard and Rivers, at least in my opinion, are also the two highest-rated players left on the board.

The scoring system for this league is 6 points for TDs, 4 for TD passes, 1 point per reception, 1 point for every 20 passing yards and 1 point for every 10 run/rec yards. Teams start 3 WR, 2 RB, QB, TE, PK, DEF and one flex (WR-RB-TE) player. 18-man rosters. No waiver moves. No lineups (it's a best-ball format). High score after 17 NFL weeks wins.

I love the Fanex expert league draft. It is one of the first expert drafts every off season. The second half of the draft is always a little interesting as owners take a few chances. I'm surprised Joey Porter is still undrafted. I think someone will draft the Jerome Simpson from Cincinnati because he could either be Chris Henry's replacement or even take 85's spot if that lowlife agent Rosenhaus gets 85 to sit out the season.

Jerry Porter. Pretty sure Joey Porter won't be drafted. But I'm hardly the guy to be pointing figures after accidentally typing yesterday that Steve Smith was averaging 114.9 yards per catch.

I would have thought Jerry Porter would be a better pick than the rookies that have been taken in round 8. I thought I would post so you know you have an interested audience for FANEX and other expert league drafts. I love your large expert section in your annual magazine, too.
