I made a somewhat lopsided trade in the Fanex competition. I traded away pick 16.05 to move up to 16.02. And to get that deal done, I moved down from 17.08 to 20.02. So that’s 3 picks for almost 3 rounds, which I’ll admit seems a little strange.
My thinking is that with the kicker run well under way, I want to go out and grab the one kicker on the board that I am shocked hasn’t been selected – Nate Kaeding. He’s a great kicker, and I fear that one of these teams right ahead of me is going to grab him. He’s very accurate (just 3 misses three years in a row), plays for a very good team, and the Chargers have an easy schedule this year (did I mention that I did an extensive study of strength of schedule for the magazine?).
Kaeding might also buy me an extra roster spot. With him in the fold, I will consider carrying only one kicker on my roster, creating a spot for an additional roll-of-the-dice player in round 20 if there’s someone on the board I like. That is a risky course of action; if Kaeding gets hurt, I would be left taking zeros at that position. But sometimes, the guys who take the risks walk away the big winners.
I did some research on the value of the second kicker (and remember, this is a best-ball league). If we assume that Kaeding again will score 118 points (I actually think he’ll score a few more) and we assume that the second kicker I would draft, early in the last round, would score 109-110 points, then we can use last year’s kickers to estimate what I would be missing out on. Using the week-by-week data for those guys (versus Kaeding), I would project to lose 24, 50, 41, or 31 points.
I’ll continue to mull that one over. I’m not sure if I’ll go with the one-kicker approach or not. Your opinions, of course, are welcome.
