A Favre Comeback?

Posted Jul. 02 at 01:52 PM

Another month, another rumor about the possibility of a Brett Favre comeback. ESPN is reporting that a source close to the Packers says Favre has contacted head coach Mike McCarthy and has an "itch" to play another season.

This rumor might have more legs than previous ones, which seemed to originate from his agent contacting other teams to gauge their interest in Favre coming out of retirement. At the time it was believed that those reports were based on his agent acting on his own. ESPN's source maintains that Favre has talked to the Packers about returning.

It's a long way from such talk to Favre actually returning to the NFL, of course, and with the Packers having spent the offseason preparing for Aaron Rodgers to be the starter, there's at least some question as to how much the team wants him back even if he does want to return. Unthinkable though it may be for Packers fans, perhaps it could all lead to Favre playing for another team next season.

Having written a back-page column for the magazine saying "Farewell" to the guy, I certainly believed he'd stay retired -- and for now, I still do. Perhaps an "itch" is no more than that, and this will blow over just as the other rumors have. In any case, under the notion of "where there's smoke, there's fire," using a late-round pick on Favre in fantasy drafts makes some sense, as does picking him up in any dynasty formats where he's been dropped. At the moment, Favre playing in 2008 -- for the Packers, or even some other team -- still looks like a longshot, but not as much as it once did.

Reminds me of when your wife tells you not to allow her to eat any ice cream today. You're like, "Why wouldn't you want to eat ice cream, but...yeah, whatever." Then a few hours later she asks you to get her some ice cream, and you're like "But you told me not to". "Well, I didn't know I would want some this bad, so just forget that." Which one do you believe? Do the Packers put their foot down and say, "No, you said you couldn't put commitment to the preparation in anymore." Or, do they say, "Just this once because I love you."

I'd be stunned if Favre plays again, particularly for another team. He probably wishes the Packers were more interested in his return, but I can't imagine he will force the team to activate or release him. The Packers clearly want to move on and, seeing that, Favre eventually will give up the idea of coming back.
