Around the NFL
Matt Jones could be cut loose by the Jaguars sooner rather than later. Already an outsider in the team’s crowded situation at wide receiver, he was booked in Arkansas this morning on charges of possession of a controlled substance.
A story posted at firstcoastnews.com says that the police report indicates that Jones had cocaine when he was arrested in Fayetteville, Ark., along with two other men. They were in a Toyota 4Runner in an unlit parking lot in a known drug area, according to the story.

With or without the drug arrest, Jones’ time in Jacksonville was probably over. He’s done little since the Jaguars selected him in the first round in 2005. Coming out of Arkansas, Jones ran a great 40 time – a 4.37 – leading Jacksonville to think it could convert him from a quarterback to a wide receiver. But despite that great time, Jones never seemed to be quick enough to consistently get separation from NFL cornerbacks. At 6-foot-6 and 240 pounds, he didn’t seem to be able to start and stop fast enough for the pro game.
I don’t think Jones will ever be a significant player in the NFL. He is, however, good enough that some other team probably will roll the dice on him. When Jacksonville rested its starters, he played well in week 17 last year, catching 8 passes for 138 yards and a touchdown in a shootout loss at Houston.
Jacksonville has a lot of other wide receivers, so they could release Jones before camp even opens. I believe Jerry Porter and Reggie Williams will start for them. Troy Williamson supposedly looked very good in the spring practices. Dennis Northcutt was a starter there last year. And they also have some younger guys – Mike Walker and John Broussard.
