Around the NFL
It’s no secret that Chris Simms doesn’t really fit into Tampa Bay’s plans. He and Jon Gruden don’t seem to get along, and the Bucs are loaded with other quarterbacks – Jeff Garcia, Brian Griese, Luke McCown and draft pick Josh Johnson.
But Simms has been a starter in this league, and a story in The Tampa Tribune indicates that there are teams that have interest in Simms – Dallas, Chicago and Detroit. With camps opening soon, a deal could go down soon, and that could elevate Simms into a No. 2 role somewhere (meaning he’d have a good chance to start some games this season).
With a trade to the Bears or Lions, it would be a near-certainty that Simms would start some games. Chicago is struggling at quarterback, with Kyle Orton and Rex Grossman the top contenders. And Detroit has only Jon Kitna, who’s getting up their in years and will always be just a few bad games away from being benched. Simms wouldn’t be as certain to start in Dallas, where he’d be stuck behind Tony Romo, but he’d have a lot more upside in the event an injury made him the starter.
