Around the NFL
The deal looked like it was dead long ago, but it appears as if the Saints have finally managed to land Jeremy Shockey. Jay Glazer of FOX Sports reports that the Super Bowl champs have agreed to send their disgruntled tight end to the Crescent City in exchange for second- and fifth-round draft picks.
This deal worked out well for New Orleans. The Saints offered the same package back in April – prior to the draft – but were turned down. By having the deal completed three months later, tit’s now for 2009 picks rather than 2008.
Shockey gives Drew Brees another receiving threat, and probably means Eric Johnson will be released before opening day. The roster spot of Billy Miller also could be in question, though Shockey has a history of injuries, so the Saints will want to keep a second pass-catching tight end around.
In his first season, Shockey put up good numbers under Sean Payton (who was in his final season then as New York’s offensive coordinator). Now those two are reunited.
Kevin Boss will now start for the Giants.
