Bengals waive former 2nd-round pick

Posted Jul. 25 at 01:46 AM

The Bengals’ crowded backfield just got a little roomier. The team waived Kenny Irons today, giving up on the player they selected in the second round a year ago.

Irons suffered a knee injury in his first preseason game a year ago and spent the year on injured reserve. He says he’s had some setbacks in his rehab, so it doesn’t look like he’ll be contributing for any team this season. The Bengals still have plenty of other running backs. Rudi Johnson is their starter. Chris Perry (a former first-round pick) looks ready to return. Kenny Watson played well at times last season. And DeDe Dorsey broke some long gainers late last year.

The announcement of the move appears at the team website.
