Around the NFL
Why do I get the feeling that 10 years from now, there’s going to be a celebrity boxing match between Michael Westbrook and Steve Smith?
The star Carolina receiver, who punched teammate Anthony Bright six years ago during a film sessions, pummeled teammate Ken Lucas at a team practice today. He was sent home from practice, and it remains to be seen whether he faces a suspension from the team or the league. Under Roger Goodell, the league has taken a get-tough stance with off-field transgressions (though more so for less-heralded players than true stars).
Westbrook, the former Washington wide receiver, once punched out Stephen Davis at a practice.
"Obviously everybody is going to be waiting to see what the repercussions are from this event," said Muhsin Muhammad. "I'm just praying that we rally together as a team, because obviously there's going to be some adversity here. The focus is not where it needs to be right now. I'm hoping we can all come together as a team, as a family, and are able to put this behind us."
Muhammad, along with free-agent pickup D.J. Hackett, could benefit if Smith is suspended – somebody would have to step up and catch more balls. The Panthers also have Dwayne Jarrett, whom they selected in the second round a year ago, but he’s made no impact as a pro so far. Twice, Jarrett has been called out by Smith for not practicing or studying hard enough (maybe he needs to get his act in gear, or he’ll be the next guy to get coldcocked).

I just read that Smith has been suspended for the 1st two games of the season. Ian, I beleive (correct me when I'm wrong) part of your rankings are based number of games played, thus Smiths yearly "total" will be less than others, moving him down in the ranks based on total points for the year (ie: spreadsheet listing highest to lowest). Do you adjust your rankings even if smiths "totals" are lower than someone else? If we can whether the strom of the 1st 2 games, is he still worthy of a high draft pick?
