Carolina suspends Steve Smith

Posted Aug. 02 at 04:43 AM

The Carolina Panthers have suspended Steve Smith for the first two games of the season, after he punched out teammate Ken Lucas at practice on Friday.

“What he did was wrong and we take very serious and he is being punished severely for it,” said coach John Fox in a story posted today by Steve Reed of the Gaston Gazette.

Fox says Smith will be back at practice on Monday.

Obviously, this is a big fantasy blow for one of the league’s elite wide receivers. He’s now gone for an eighth of the season. I’ll figure out today just how many spots that will move him down – he’s still a talented, productive, competitive guy.

Ian, I beleive (correct me when I'm wrong) part of your rankings are based number of games played, thus Smith's yearly "total" will be less than others, moving him down in the ranks based on total points for the year (ie: spreadsheet listing highest to lowest). Do you adjust your rankings even if smith's "totals" are lower than someone else? If we can weather the storm of the 1st 2 games, is he still worthy of a high draft pick?

Clearly Smith is a very emotional (and apparently volatile) player. From my experience watching him, that's a really valuable thing for his performance. I think missing two games will motivate him to put up big numbers and he'll over compensate. I actually think the suspension will help his season totals.
