The Lions have reached a contract agreement with Rudi Johnson, according to Tom Kowalski of Mlive.com.
Johnson, according to Kowalski, likely will become Detroit’s No. 2 tailback, behind rookie starter Kevin Smith. When the Lions officially make the move on Tuesday morning, they could clear a roster spot for him by releasing Tatum Bell, who wasn’t impressive in the preseason.
Johnson is an upgrade for Detroit at this position. Depending on his own condition and how well Smith plays, Johnson potentially could either win the starting job here at some point or move the offense into more of a committee situation. The signing causes Smith to fall a few spots on draft boards, while Johnson should move up to be an average-type backup tailback.
“I just had a chance to watch him (Johnson) in some drills, and he's impressive,” said Rod Marinelli. “He's a big, thick guy who has great feet. I played against him over the years so I know he's a very physical back. He's a guy with a lot of talent and a lot of experience.”
