Around the NFL
With Rashard Mendenhall (called “Rashaan” Mendenhall by Emmitt Smith on Monday night) out for the season with a fractured shoulder, the Steelers are bringing back Najeh Davenport.
Davenport is coming to Pittsburgh today for a workout. If he’s in reasonable shape, the Steelers will sign him, according to a story in today’s Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
The Steelers are without Willie Parker (sprained knee) for at least one more week. On Monday, they lost both Mendenhall and fullback-tailback Carey Davis with a sprained ankle. Their likely starter for Sunday appears to be Mewelde Moore, the former Viking they signed to a free-agent deal in the offseason. Moore had a big 24-yard catch to set up the game-winning field goal against Baltimore but ran for only 13 yards on 8 carries in that game.
Davenport actually started his last game for the Steelers. With Parker out, Davenport ran for only 25 yards on 16 carries in a playoff loss last year to Jacksonville – the same team they’ll play on Sunday.
