There has been some positive press for Dyami Brown in Jacksonville, both from camp watchers and players, including Trevor Lawrence. I'm not sure whether to buy into it.
Certainly, he's a talented guy. Washington's third-round pick back in 2021, Brown made some big plays in his second season (just 5 receptions, but he averaged nearly 30 yards per catch on them). Last year he had his most productive season, catching 30 passes for 308 yards and a touchdown. The Jaguars signed him to a one-year, $10 million deal, so they clearly view him as having a role, probably as a field-stretching No. 3 (behind Brian Thomas and Travis Hunter).
But coming into significant value in fantasy leagues after his quiet first few seasons seems a little less likely.
Using the search tools at pro-football-reference.com, I generated a list of wide receivers this century who at the start of their careers (minimum 50 games, so typically 3-4 seasons) caught fewer than 100 passes, like Brown (he's at 59 catches in 63 games), but at least 50 (so as to exclude the pure special-teamers). I came up with a list of 49 wideouts who met the criteria, and then I went looking for each player's best season.
From that group, there are just 2 top-25 fantasy seasons (PPR): Miles Austin with Dallas, and Jerry Porter with the Raiders. Six others at least had a top-50 season at some point in their careers.
But aside from those guys, very modest top seasons from those players. That seems like the likeliest scenario from Dyami: maybe putting together a season like Jacoby Jones, Richie James or Devin Duvernay. Perhaps a spot starter in fantasy leagues (more if someone gets hurt), but unlikely to put up difference-making numbers.
Table shows the totals (receptions, yards, touchdowns) for those 49 wide receivers in their first four seasons, as well as their career-best seasons (the year indicated), sorted by ranking that year in PPR leagues.
