If you've got an upcoming rookie draft, or just want a name to file away for a last-round pick in a re-draft league, consider Jacksonville fifth-rounder Denard Robinson. A quarterback in college, a wide receiver, apparently, on draft day, and a running back, apparently, in Jacksonville, he's the new "Slash."
At this weekend's minicamp, he's lining up at both wide receiver and running back. The Jaguars have some good players at receiver, but the running back depth chart is a little thin, with Maurice Jones-Drew coming off foot surgery and in a contract year, and only Justin Forsett behind him.
After playing quarterback in college, Robinson is obviously a major question mark -- not a guy to invest too much faith in in fantasy leagues. At receiver, his hands need a lot of work, since he's used to throwing the ball, not catching it. As a running back, he's got 4.4 speed, but not much bulk (5-11, 196).
We've seen players described as "Slash" types before (popularized by Kordell Stewart, a quarterback/wide receiver with Pittsburgh). Dexter McCluster was a recent one who hasn't really panned out, although he's not as fast as Robinson is.
If nothing else, maybe Robinson can be a change-of-pace quarterback. Why would the Jaguars hesitate to take Blaine Gabbert off the field every once in a while?
As I write this, I'm planning to select Robinson at 3.02 in my dynasty rookie draft. He may not pan out, but whoever I take there is going to be a longshot. Should be a fun guy to keep an eye on all through the preseason.
