With the kind of passing numbers NFL teams are putting up nowadays, you have to have a good quarterback. But at the same time, it's a deeper position than in the past, allowing you to wait a little longer if you want to go that route. Ian Allan explores.

I'm doing this Fanex Draft right now. It's a different league in that it's a PPR. It also increases the value of field players by having three starting wide receivers plus a flex. So the talent definitely runs dry at wide receiver and running back.

But where to address the quarterback position? You have to have a good one there.

Drew Brees went in the third round in this draft. That may seem low, but you must balance against the reality that a bunch of owners in this league will blow off quarterbacks. Why take Brees in the third if you can get Tom Brady in the sixth?

I've been looking at quarterbacks all along, trying to read other owners and get one at the right spot. Aaron Rodgers was a possibility at pick 4.07, but I was approached with a trade-down opportunity -- move down to 5.08, and that turned my ninth-round pick into an extra pick in the sixth. I liked that.

I held picks 5.06 and 5.08, and thought about Cam Newton or Tom Brady there, but I figured one of those guys, or Matt Ryan, might make it into the sixth round, so I went with a pair of wide receivers instead. You must have a solid corps of four wide receivers in this format.

Before my 6.06 and 6.07 picks, however, there was a run on quarterbacks. Ryan, Newton, Brady went just before my choice.

So with those picks, I skipped quarterbacks again. Looking at the lay of the land, I figure at most four quarterbacks will be picked before I'm up again at 7.06. But there are five worthy quarterbacks left. I'm confident I'll get one of those guys, so I put off quarterback again. I will re-evaluate at 7.06. If there are still a big group left, I may try to sneak quarterback down to pick 8.07, but that's unlikely. I don't want to get too cute. At that stage, we're getting into the area where teams will start selecting backup quarterbacks.
