We're not going to crown the champion of the Fantasy Index Open, but we can take a sneak peak at how our contestents are doing with three quarters of the season completed. Looking at just kickers, Brant Hollenbeck of Lansing, Mich., and Juan Novo of Miami are your early leaders.
The Fantasy Index Open, recall, is the contest where contestants pick their top 20 at each position -- QB, RB, WR, TE, K and defenses. Lists had to be submitted prior to the start of the first preseason game back in August.
The winner of this deal wins a gigantic trophy from the team at Affordable Trophies. They've kindly agreed to donate a trophy just like the one in the photo. (And keep that in mind when deciding where to buy your league's fantasy trophy this season. They even have a "Toilet Bowl" trophy if your league does that kind of thing.
The top two finishers in this thing also win spots in the Experts Poll we run in the magazine -- a chance for more glory.
It's early. There's still a month to go in the season, and this is just one of the positions.
But your leader right now is Brant Hollenbeck of Lansing, Mich. He's just ahead of Juan Novo of Miami, Steve Hoyt of Buffalo Grove, Ill., and Steve Moyer of Alameda, Calif.
Hollenbeck and Novo are both in sales. Hoyt is a teacher. Moyer is an investment realtor.
Scoring in this thing is really complex. First there's the points the kicker has scored (which are just regular NFL points). That gets multiplied against where you ranked the guy. If you ranked a player #1, his points get multiplied by 30. If you ranked him #2, he gets multiplied by 29. That continues right down to a #20 player getting multiplied by 11. So the first-place guys are worth about three times as much as the #20 guys.
We used to down 20 down to 1 on the factoring, but that puts too strong of an emphasis on the top guys. Especially with the RB-WR positions, it gives very little reward for coming up with a sleeper guy between 15th and 20th. That's why we tweaked the scoring a few years back.
We'll score this whole thing in early-to-mid January.
