Fantasy Index Super League

Congrats to Super League Champ Michael Murillo -- no joke!

Fantasy Index columnist finishes first among hundreds of contestants

Congratulations to Fantasy Index columnist Michael Murillo, who outplayed hundreds of contestants and finished as this year's grand champion in the Fantasy Index Super League and in the process created a bit of a sticky wicket.

And hats off to prize winners Travis Henry of Rowlett, Texas and Mark Maloney of Andover, Minnesota.

(Scroll down to see the final top 25 for 2013, plus the week 17 weekly winner.)

Usually when a company runs a contest like the Fantasy Index Super League, it prevents its own employees from playing. That way there are no questions about collusion or manipulation of the results. But all of the Fantasy Index guys participate in the Super League because we think our readers enjoy competing alongside us. The league is administered by a third party, and we have very, very little access to anything. We can't edit the scoring system, and we can't even edit offensive team names (we're looking at you, Jack Silverman), let alone game scores.

Aside from Michael, longtime contributor Justin Eleff finished ninth overall. We like to think (imagine/dream/delude ourselves) that Ian Allan, Andy Richardson and Bruce Taylor would have finished higher, had we not started swinging for the fences in the final weeks of the contest. But only Michael finished atop the hundreds of readers who played. And that is a bit awkward.

You see, subscribers frequently tell us "You should put me in your magazine, because I'm better than the guys who do your Experts Poll / Mock Draft / Mock Auction." So we use the Fantasy Index Super League as a sort of play-in game, giving readers the opportunity to work their way into our print product. The top two finishers in the Super League are awarded spots in the Mock Draft and Mock Auction published in Fantasy Football Index magazine. The overall champion also wins a free subscription to the 2014 Fantasy Index Super Fanatic Package.

We're pleased that one of our Fantasy Index staffers finished on top of the pile, but we want to hold the door open for readers to work their way into the magazine.

So while Michael can/will/should claim the moral victory, we are awarding the first prize -- the 2014 Super Fanatic subscription, plus his pick of mock draft or mock auction -- to (runner-up) Travis Henry of Rowlett, Texas. And the second prize will be awarded to Mark Maloney of Andover, Minnesota. As you can see from the standings below, these guys finished way ahead of the pack, and we look forward to matching them up with the pros next spring.

Congratulations, too, to Stephen Coleman of Aurora, Ill. His "Coleman Omens" amassed 220 points to lead the Super League in Week 17. Stephen vaulted from outside the top 25 all the way to 11th overall. Great job!
