Ask the Experts

What is your preliminary top 10 for the 2014 season?

ASK THE EXPERTS appears weekly from training camp through Super Bowl with answers to a new question being posted Thursday morning. How the guest experts responded when we asked them: What is your preliminary top 10 for the 2014 season?

MICHAEL NAZAREK

  1. Jamaal Charles, KC - HC Andy Reid said he would lean on Charles heavily in 2013 and he came up huge, finishing out on top by 40 points in PPR leagues. There is no reason to believe a repeat isn't in order here.
  2. LeSean McCoy, PHI - He was a top three RB in 2013 despite scoring just 11 times. That number should increase, making him the No. 2 RB for 2014.
  3. Matt Forte, CHI - He is nearly interchangeable with McCoy, but catches more passes. That said, his 12 scores from 2013 were a career high, and it might be tough to increase that number.
  4. Adrian Peterson, MIN - He'll be 29 in March, but still battled through a groin injury to be a top 10 RB in 2013. He is still inhuman, and remains an elite top tier fantasy RB when healthy, but one with a slight injury concern.
  5. Calvin Johnson, DET - Despite playing through a knee injury and missing two games, Megatron still was a top three fantasy WR point getting per game in PPR leagues. Assuming he's healthy, he'll reclaim the top spot in 2014.
  6. Peyton Manning, DEN - This is the highest I've ever placed a QB in my top 12 to begin a year, but Manning proved he's worth the early pick another year removed from neck surgery and the top receiving crew returning intact would make him a lock as the top fantasy QB in 2014. That would mean the Broncos will re-sign free-agent-to-be WR Eric Decker, something that isn't quite a lock to happen.
  7. LeVeon Bell, PIT - Bell was a top 10 fantasy RB from week 4 moving forward in PPR leagues in 2013 and he'll only get better playing in a full season with a new zone-blocking scheme. His 45 catches could easily become 60+ in 2014.
  8. Marshawn Lynch, SEA - Four straight seasons of 11+ rushing TDs and he caught a surprisingly high 36 passes with two more scores in 2013. Lynch is younger than A.P., something that keeps him a top 10 fantasy player for 2014.
  9. Josh Gordon, CLE - His breakout season was no fluke. A better QB leading the team will make him even more dangerous in 2014, cementing Gordon as a top 10 fantasy pick.
  10. Eddie Lacy, GB - There's no doubt that Lacy can get the job done. Why not higher? Frankly, if QB Aaron Rodgers remains healthy, Lacy is likely to see less touches and scores in 2014. I still love my Bama boy, though!
  11. Demaryius Thomas, DEN - Back-to-back 1400+ yardage seasons, and he increased his scores from 10 to 14 over those years, while maintaining 90+ catches. What's not to like here?
  12. A.J. Green, CIN - Another WR? You bet! Consistency rules here, as Green totaled 1350+ yards and 11 scores in each of the past two seasons, adding 97 & 98 catches as well. That gave him nearly 20 fantasy points per game in PPR leagues, with only the top three RBs on this list scoring more than 20 points per game in 2013 out of all RBs. Times are a changing!

ERIC CATURIA

  1. Jamaal Charles
  2. LeSean McCoy
  3. Adrian Peterson
  4. Marshawn Lynch
  5. Peyton Manning
  6. Matt Forte
  7. Eddie Lacy
  8. Calvin Johnson
  9. Aaron Rodgers
  10. Ryan Mathews

After the first nine players, selecting from the remaining player pool will seemingly be a crapshoot due to free agency and potential role changes. However, Mathews enters the Top 10 due to his stellar finish to the regular season while playing through a high ankle sprain. Honorable mention: Drew Brees, Josh Gordon, Demaryius Thomas, DeMarco Murray, and Chris Johnson.

IAN ALLAN

I went through the 32 teams, pulling out the names of any players I could possibly imagine selecting in the first round of a 12-team draft. For running backs, in approximate order, I came up with Jamaal Charles, Eddie Lacy, LeSean McCoy, LeVeon Bell, Adrian Peterson, Giovani Bernard, Matt Forte and Marshawn Lynch. Forte and Lynch both will be 28 on opening day and have handled the ball a lot already. I would prefer to not select them in the first round. With the game changing in recent years, I think it’s reasonable to expect a quarterback or two will throw 40-plus touchdowns, and if I can get one of those guys, I’m interested. Aaron Rodgers, Peyton Manning and Drew Brees are the three today that I might consider in the first round. I’ll toss in one tight end (Jimmy Graham), but let’s see how his contract situation plays out. At wide receiver, I separated out Demaryius Thomas, A.J. Green, Calvin Johnson, Josh Gordon and Dez Bryant. Not a lot of difference between those guys. With Eric Decker maybe signing elsewhere and Wes Welker being an older guy who had multiple concussions last year, I’m thinking Thomas might account for a higher share of Denver’s offense in 2014.

MICAH JAMES

As the NFL continues to evolve, and rules continue to favor passing the football, fantasy owners may need to begin re-thinking the "running back early and often" paradigm. I believe we will see more wide receivers inside of the top 10 draft picks in 2014. At this point in time, my early top 10 for 2014 would be:

  1. Calvin Johnson
  2. LeSean McCoy
  3. Jamaal Charles
  4. Demaryius Thomas
  5. Jimmy Graham
  6. Doug Martin
  7. Brandon Marshall
  8. Julio Jones
  9. Matt Forte
  10. Adrian Peterson

James, the FFMagicMan, won the FSTA Accuracy Rankings Challenge in 2012, finishing first out of 61 expert entries with an unprecedented Top-9 finish in each of the four measured skill positions. ANDY RICHARDSON

  1. Jamaal Charles. The guy was great all year long and singlehandedly decided Week 15 matchups in 2013. No reason not to take him first.
  2. LeSean McCoy. Like Charles, a big part of rushing and passing offense.
  3. Adrian Peterson. You want to get out a year early rather than a year late, but Peterson is a guy it's tough to bet against.
  4. Eddie Lacy. A monster the second half of this season, and probably next season.
  5. Matt Forte. Actually underrated by most. Just a really good player and focal point of a strong offense.
  6. Josh Gordon. Sold. Sky is the limit for Gordon.
  7. LeVeon Bell. Full-time back who's young and in an offense that won't use other tailbacks.
  8. Demaryius Thomas. Yes, the second wideout I'd take ahead of Calvin Johnson. Great player in a great offense working with a great quarterback.
  9. Calvin Johnson. Should have a little chip on his shoulder next season. Could also consider Dez Bryant at this point.
  10. Peyton Manning. This is about where I'm willing to select a quarterback and not feel like I'm passing on a difference-making running back or receiver.
  11. Doug Martin, Marshawn Lynch and DeMarco Murray all start to look intriguing at this point, although I think I'd rather be in the top 7 and then settle for one of these players in the 2nd round.
