Patriots running backs

The Patriots are known as Tom Brady's team, but as we've pointed out many times, they're a better running team than most would expect. Over the last two years, their running backs have run for more yards and touchdowns than any other team in the league.

We know multiple backs will be involved, so it's interesting to see how various beat writers think things will shake out. In this Boston Globe story, Erik Frenz suggests a larger-than-expected role for a couple of youngsters, and also a surprise cut.

Most notably, Frenz thinks rookie James White could get "major touches" in "every phase of the game." He has a quick burst, doesn't fumble, can pass protect, and is a good receiver. Sounds like an ideal back for the New England offense. Note that New England's incumbent running backs, Stevan Ridley, Shane Vereen and Brandon Bolden, are all in the final year of their deals.

Frenz thinks Bolden, surprisingly, is in danger of being cut. In his eyes, the other backs on the roster can fill his various roles better than he can. The other youngster he's intrigued by is undrafted free agent Roy Finch, a smallish but explosive back out of Oklahoma. Finch returned kicks during minicamp and could contribute on special teams.

We're not ready to throw in the towel on Bolden; we wouldn't even be surprised if he moves past Ridley for the main ballcarrier role. But it's interesting to think that White could have a larger role in the offense than expected, and that Finch could carve himself out a role, as well.
