David Wilson was the Giants' first-round pick back in 2012, and he gave glimpses of his playmaking potential, rushing for 100 yards, 2 TDs, and bringing a kick back for another score a late-season win over New Orleans. But fumbling and injury woes ruined his 2013 season, and it now appears the latter of those will end his career.
The Giants placed Wilson on injured reserve today, and have advised him to retire from football. Unlike, say, Jahvid Best or other players told by their teams they shouldn't play again, Wilson seems to have already taken that advice to heart.
"I don't want anybody to feel sorry for me, or pity me," says Wilson. "I lived my dream. A lot of people only get to dream their dream. I lived that dream. Now I have a chance to dream another dream and live that, too."
Safe to move on from Wilson in dynasty leagues, and have even more interest in the standout rookie from last night's Hall of Fame Game, Andre Williams. The depth chart is now clearly Rashad Jennings, Williams and Peyton Hillis, and it's not hard to see Williams overtaking the limited Jennings at some point for the main ballcarrying duties.
For Wilson, it's just an unfortunate reminder that these guys can see their careers end before they've even begun. It happens all too often, and makes you wonder if it's already happened to some players (Jermichael Finley) and who will be next.
